Default 4.6L or 5.4L?

So, I am looking to get rid of my truck. Its just costing me too much in maintenance and I am way too much in to it. I am looking at newer truck, maybe 07+. I dont wanna spend more then $10K. I just need something solid and to use for emergency response (I am a Volunteer Firefighter). I hear the 5.4L engines are problematic. Can anyone elaborate on the 5.4L vs the 4.6L? I had 2 vehicles previously (Crown Victoria Police Interceptors) with the 4.6L and it was very solid. Thanks for any help!

I've got the 4.6L and it has all the same issues that the 5.4L is known for.
- 2 broken exhaust manifold studs on each side
- replaced both VCTs due to diesel sound between 800 and 1200 rpms under load.
- phaser knock at hot idle
- ticking sounds from injectors or maybe valve train.
Motor has about 80,000 miles on it. It is reliable if you don't mind the ticking. It's never let me down yet.

That doesnt help me much.

As stated, I just need something solid and to use for emergency response (I am a Volunteer Firefighter) and to haul stuff in (forgot that one). I just need something 4WD and I am over tossing money in to this one.

ok. then the 4.6 would be the better choice for you. i have had 2 4.6's ( a 1997 and 2004) both were great engines. the only problems i had with either one of them was spark plugs blew out. very reliable motor based on my experience
