Default 302 clatter

Im hoping someone may be able to help identify this noise; the diesel clatter. This is my 1988 F150 with a 302 and Manual 5spd. It's developed a clatter at idle when warm. Cant hear it when cold or when power so going to the drive train or down shifting, just at warm idle. it sounds like it's low and rear on the engine, my best guess anyway. Other than this, the engine is working perfectly.

I hope this link works, im not computer friendly so... Copy the link into your browser address and play. You can hear the clatter best starting at the 7-9 second mark. Link is apparently only good through 25 Nov.

I have 300+ miles on a new oil change, 10W-40 GTX, and the oil is still honey colored. It's not leaking or burning any oil and the oil gage indicates there is pressure.

Thanks for the help, ideas of where to look, and suggestions.

Chip

The gauge is a fake. Click this & read the caption:

If you want to make it actually work for ~$20, follow the links in the caption & keep reading. But it only reads pressure coming out of the pump - not at the crankshaft journal, or the lifters.

You didn't say what filter you're using - MotorCraft is significantly better than most, but Wix & WalMart brand filters are also good. Fram is arguably the worst.

Thanks Steve,
Do you believe that the clatter is an oil pressure issue? I knew the gauge was just an indicator, and not a true reading of the pressure. TSBs are fascinating, thanks for the links.

I couldn't guess. You'd have to answer my question, and do some more diagnosis.

My 4.9L has clattered like a diesel for the past ~700Kmi, since I pulled it out of the junkyard. But it doesn't sound like an oil pressure clatter. The point is: "clatter" is a very subjective term, and sounds don't sound the same after being recorded & played back as they sound in-person. So there's no way for me to really listen to what you're hearing.
