302 or 351
I have a 1996 f 150 with a 302 5.0L standard single cab short box with a 3 inch lift and 33's, it has headers with duel 2 1/4 inch straight pipe, cold air, electric fan, msd ignition, and msd coil and distributor cap. And it's still not enough power as I'd like so I don't know if is should just rebuild the 302 and get a good set of heads and cam and pistons or make it in to a 331 stroker, I wanted a 347 stroker but herd they were not a daily driver type of engine. By the way this truck is a daily driver/ bogger so I want the power but also I don't wanna kill the fuel mileage to bad even though 302's are gas pigs. Or should I get a 351 and build that up or even stroke that . So if any has any input or type of performance parts are the best and work that would be great, thanks

I had a 351 in my 94 4X4 and it smoked the 33’s I had on it... took some gas though like you said.

You can easily get mild cams and cam/lifter kits for under $200, even $150 in some cases but, you'll likely spend another $150 or $200 just on the replacement gaskets, timing set, and potentially valve train parts that you'll need to replace along the way.
That said, I'm looking into a slightly more aggressive cam for my 351 rebuild now. Lunati Barebones builds are claiming up to 325 horses with no other major mods. Just a thought.

I went and looked at the specs on the Barebones cams, both roller and flat tappet. Not anything I'd want in a truck to be honest with you. Too much duration and you won't have any low end as a result.
I did see one flat tappet that had decent specs for a truck, but the the lobe separation angle isn't exactly optimal and the OP has a roller setup and would be taking a step backwards.
Can't really go by max hp numbers for a truck setup as you would a Mustang.

I have a thread I created for people looking to build 302s. Most of it can be applied to 351s as well.
I will bump that thread up for you to take a look at.

I like the 302 based small block as it is lighter . Do a Dart alum block stroked to 434 with a set of AFR 215's or so and 700hp+ all day with the ability to handle all the boost or juice you can throw at it 1000+hp. Now if on a budget a stock 351 block will handle 600hp all day but it depends what your goals are.
