POOKYT

On the drivers side exhaust, the EGR tube has two parallel lines coming off with small dia. rubber hoses running up to a approx 2"x4" plastic electronic component. What is this component and what does it do? Having spuratic rough idle issues and from time to time it is running like it has a bad coil pack. I bought a coil pack to try in the #8 cyl first as I have had several other Fords with a similar coil pack problem. But I noticed one of the small black hoses was completely gone and the other had a crack near the electronic thing-a-ma-jig. Help???
