I am going to look a 95 and am wondering what common issues I should look for, gave the truck a fast look over and smelled coolant, but saw no signs of leakage any ideas what that could be?

Anything you should expect on a 28 year old vehicle. Past patterns can be thrown out the door on something so old.

Pressure test the cooling system to see if it holds pressure and look for leaks. Water pump's weep hole and radiator would be my first places to check.
