Unhappy 2003 4.2L v6 Chokes after going through water hole

My 2003 F150 4x4 Sport is a great truck and i love her, but she has an issue. She will sling it up in the mud all day long, but as soon as we start splashing some water she wants to choke really bad, idk if it is the steam getting sucked in the intake, i have no aftermarket air intake yet, but some people have told me that that particular engine is notorious for doing this. I thought maybe i should have it checked for vacume leaks (because i have absolutly no idea how or what to do there) or ask a pro if i need a new air intake, or putting some of that water protectant in the spark plug housing to keep moisture from getting in there. I am stuck trying to figure out what to try without breaking the bank. She also spits just a tiny tiny bit sometimes going from 2nd to 3rd hardly enough to notice, you have to know what you are listening for to hear it. somebody pleaseeeeeee pleaseeeeee pleaseeeee help me. my truck olny has 90k on it and my buddys can plow through water with theirs and nothing ever happens and one of them has a stock ranger this is embarressing!
Thanks!!

You're in the wrong section buddy. This is the '96 and under engine section.
