If that's all they are doing, that is very excessive. Get another estimate or two.The shop is likely going by the book. The distributor can be changed out and the base timing set in about an hour.. I can buy a distrubutor and even double its cost for markup, add an estimated shop labor, shop towels and its around a third of what you are being quoted.

How exactly do you "know the distributor is bad"? What truck are you talking about? You should put ALL the truck's details into your signature as this page explains:

4.9 1987 F150 XL stepside the trrucks 35 years old systematically all the factory parts have failed,to date; i have had the automatic transmission over hauled new fuel system incl. tank ,cooling system, ignition system except distributorthe reason for the replacement is the timing is very advanced and i can't get back even close to spec's i was at a loss but i purchased a distributor over the weekend, and have yet install it i'm taking the pick up off of it because its only warrantied for 2 years .sorry my post was so vague but like my truck it seems my eyes are out of warranty as well i'm reduced to one eye and 60% in the other.

I have a 91 f-150 4.9 inline six. Am having a skip or lack of power mostly on low end and pretty constant under load (moving}. Have done a tune up recently cap wires rotor , fuel filter and ran some dry gas thru a full tank of gas. Thought initally had got a load of bad or watery gas drained tank 99% empty . Started with a fresh gallon problem still persist. Tested fuel pressure reads around 45 psi at idle thought maybe fuel pump may be bad not so sure it is maybe a bad distributor or ignition coil?? Any ideas or thoughts on fuel pressure??

That's not what this thread is about. You should start your own new thread in this forum, and put ALL the truck's details into your signature as this page explains:
