Would dropping tire size help with towing?
I have a 2013, 5.0 2wd, long WB.
It came stock with 17" rims and 3.31 gearing. (bad choice by ford)
If I drop the tire size down to 16" rims, it should in effect lower the gearing , correct?
Its also to high for me to easily reach into the bed, this would help a little.
Don't care about speedometer.
Thoughts?

Depends on what size tire you have on the 16" rims. You could keep the 17s and put a tire with a shorter sidewall on it.
or...better:
Since it's 2wd, why not just get a 3.73 gearset put on? For under $1000(less than the cost of 4 new rims and tires) you could permanently solve that issue.

An option that many choose due to their needs.

Agree'd. Being that you only have a 2wd you should regear. Smaller tires would do the same thing but I wouldnt bother and it will look silly since the stock tires are already on the smallish side. Plus you would need to go down almost 4" to make it the effective equivalent of a 3.73. That puts you on 28's at best.
Definitely dont go smaller wheels.

No. Wheel size doesn't matter. All that matters is tire revolutions per mile.
In addition 16" wheels may not fit over your brake calipers.
Your stock tires are 682 revs/mile. To get the equivalent of 3.55 ratio you'd need tires with 737 revs/mile. For example the Goodyear RADIAL LS Tire - LT235/60R17E. Expensive tires made for limosines, but shorter tires with enough weight capacity to meet your needs.
To get the equivalent of 3.73 ratio, you'd need tires with revs/mile of 768. Good luck in finding those for any size wheels with enough weight capacity for your needs.
