Where is WDH 5000 limit stated?
 

I'd like to read it for myself, is it in the owner's manual on some page?

I don't know what WDH 5000 means, but the limit for towing no more than 5,000 pounds without a WDH is printed on a sticker right on the hitch receiver. It says "Weight Carrying 5,000", Weight Distributiong 12,200 or something similar depending on which receiver you have".

As far as what your manual says, if you utilize the Ford site, owner.ford.com, you can download a PDF version of your manual and search it. You will find only this reference - "For vehicles without a Heavy Duty Towing Package, do not exceed a trailer weight of 5,000 lb".

So what should I tell someone who buys a new hitch, one that does not require a WDH at that weight. Do they no longer require the use of a WDH system?

Tell them to conduct the proper research as to whether a difference receiver, attached to the F-150 in a proper manner, has different requirements. They should carefully read, and understand, what the hitch receiver's specs say. For example, Curt sells a Class IV hitch for a 2018 F-150 XLT that says it is rated to 10,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 1,000 lbs of tongue weight, and with a wdh 12,000 pounds and 1,200 of tongue weight. However, it says "Trailer hitch weight ratings are limited to vehicle manufacturer's stated capacities".

In other words, don't play games, the truck is now the limiting factor.

Well that is true, but I am trying to ask if it is the truck or the hitch that is really the limiting factor. Especially since Ford rates the Ranger to tow much higher w/o a WDH.

Curt says the truck is the limiting factor even if you buy a hitch that has more capacity. Couldn't be clearer.
