What Gears to use

Hello, I have a 2009 F150 Lariet 4x4. It has the factory tow package with sway control. It does not have max tow package but I did add electric brake for a trailer. It has 4 wheel disc brakes a/abs advancetrac w/roll stability control. It has the 508a package fail safe cooling system. It also has 20inch wheels, 7200 #GVWR package w/ regular axle and 3.31 gears. I pull a 10,000 # trailer loaded. I really srugles pulling this trailer, I guess I need to change gear ratio, suggestions please. What gears should I go to, any other ideas? Can't buy new truck right now

What engine? Stock size tires? If stock tires 3.73 would probably be best, dont forget the front. Im not gonna give the gvwr lecture you are about to recieve but 10k #s is a heavy trailer for a half ton truck period.

350 maybe 250 but 350 would be best......... just go to your local Ford Dealer and tell them your looking for an F350 it will have the right gears and the capacity to tow what you want.

My lowly 250 has over 2600lbs of payload. How much do you suggest he has for a 10,000lb trailer? That trailer should have a tongue weight of 1,250lbs which leaves ~1400lbs for passengers and or gear...

4.10s would be about the best of both worlds for what you are trying to pull. However, you are probably overloaded so even with the gear upgrade ( it will help with the power) ever other aspect will still suffer. Airbags will help too.

Yeah it can do it but probably not a good idea.

BTW, have you weighed the truck and trailer?

I have the 5.4 motor. Thinking maybe updating trailer, now have 30 ft toy hauler 10,000 # loaded. May go with trailer weighing 8200# fully loaded. Truck is 145 ft supercrew carring 400 # passengers and maybe 500# gear. Any ideas, think I would be ok with 4.10 drive about 10,000 mi a yr. in town and country, About 3,000 mi yr on 1-75 with travel trailer.
Thanks for yhe help

So 400# people + 500# gear= 900#

Assuming your truck has roughly 1400# payload (yellow sticker on door) leaves you with 500# left over for tongue weight.
