Towing With The 5.4 ???
#2
I had a 5.4 with the 6 speed and 3.55s. No real complaints at all- but it did run out of breath in the upper RPMs.
I had a totally different transmission, but I wouldn't be afraid of the old 5.4. It was a great tug engine and the 3.55s were adequate for our TT. Not a rock star, but not underpowered by any means.

It's good up to tow rating. Better towing than new 5.0 down low as it has more torque earlier.

I have the same truck but with 3.73 gears. I tow 6000-6500lb.(loaded) travel trailer with it. The motor handles it fine, I keep the OD off.
I do have Timbrens and Rancho 9000's in the rear to control/eliminate the bounce when loaded up.
My tow rating is 8800lbs.

I pulled tens of thousands of miles with my 08 XLT. My TT weighed in around 6500lb. It'll tow all day long without issue. 10MPG though, but that's reasonable enough when pulling a house on wheels.
