Default Vibration when towing

2020 3.5 4x4 5.5 bed. I now have 20k miles on it (bought new). I bought a new utility trailer (7x16 dual axle) and it shakes my truck when going 45-65 mph. It’s an annoying vibration/shutter feeling. Tires on the truck are balanced and rotated. I thought it was the trailer so i had that looked at and while it was there I hooked up my older trailer (7x12 single axle utility) and it does it with that one too. I also put a different hitch on and does it with that one also. Any ideas? I have searched a few posts and haven’t found anything. Most of the fixes I found is the trailer was the problem.

Its pretty common, mine does this when I tow a trailer as well. I had a 5x10 open trailer that would do it pretty badly, especially wnen empty. I have a 6x12 single axle box trailer I borrow from time to time that does it as well but not as bad, it has more tongue weight even empty. I just towed a Uhaul car hauler this past week and it wasn't near as bad but it was there a little bit, almost non existent when loaded though. I believe it has to do with the lighter aluminum body, tongue weight and our softer suspension.

You didn’t say if you had the trailer tires balanced. If not, I would start there. I’ve had to do that on a snowmobile trailer before.

Does it vibrate when there is some weight in the trailer? My 2020 3.5 does not vibrate at all with any trailer I connect, from TT, to boat, to utility trailers.

I don’t have any vibration while using my boat (loaded with boat) trailer (single axle) or 6’ X 10’ flat landscape trailer either loaded or unloaded. I would check the trailer hitch assembly for loose nuts/bolts. As a matter of fact hauling my boat is about 3800 lbs and I don’t feel anything rides smooth and the braking is fine (boat trailer has surge brakes), the vibration you’re feeling could be a loose trailer axle, loose lug nuts, wheel bearing on your trailer. So I would look at your hitch assembly, trailer ball, trailer ball hitch assembly, trailer tongue for cracks, trailer axles, etc.

Good luck

The fact it is happening with multiple trailers is interesting. Would almost have to be suspension related I would say...but wouldn't know where to start.

I’m not saying your wrong by any means, but it never did this before for me.

it does, but when I load it back heavy (opposite of what you are supposed to do) it’s not as bad.
