U-Haul Trailers Don't Have Electric Brakes?

I'm seeing on their website, "All U-Haul trailers and towing are wired with a 4-way flat light connector". So if none of their trailers are 7-pins, then I guess no electric brakes that you can use with your brake controller? Another part saying it has "automatic brakes". Not sure what that is. So how does that work? I was hoping to rent something that has brakes that work with the Ford brake controller to try it out.

they have surge brakes

Yep. Uhaul has mechanical surge brakes. Just rented one. Not sure why you'd want to test your electric brakes, but I would guess if you went to a RV place, acted interested in a smaller unit and said you wanted to try how the truck pulled it, they'd let you. Don't look at larger one that will require a wdh, but a smaller pop-up, or 17' or so.

Smaller ones have no brakes. But the others are surge, yes. Not many people who rent trailers have brake controllers...

I was basically just wanting to try out towing for the first time and hoped for a trailer that has electric brakes so I can try out everything. So maybe someplace else rents out trailers.

Most trailer rentals (not uhaul) all have surge brakes. Even the place by me that rent 10,000gvw 7x14 and 7x16s enclosed cargo trailers. There is only one place I know around here that rents anything with electric brakes but it's rare.

Unless you own a trailer with electric brakes, you best bet would be to find a friend with a trailer equipped with electric brakes and ask if you can try out theirs. Almost everyone who rents will have surge brakes, because people renting a trailer are unlikely to have a brake controller and whatever other electronics are required to make electric brakes work.

I added electric brakes to my boat trailer and I can tell you, I don't even notice it's there when braking. Once you get the gain set correctly (if your controller allows adjustment), they make braking very smooth. Much better than surge brakes, which always seem to me to feel like you're getting thumped from behind by a small vehicle.

I hate that "thump", it drives me nuts.

right. rental utility trailers that need brakes have surge brakes so that they don't have to deal with people that don't have brake controllers. obviously most people renting a trailer don't have a brake controller on hand and hooked up. surge brakes are more idiot proof.

you could try renting an RV trailer for a weekend camping trip. but if you're just bored and looking for something to do and figured spending money on a utility trailer and playing around with your brake controller would be fun, there are other hobbies we can recommend.

No, it's not being "bored" or a "hobby". I'm wanting to practice and learn towing so I'll know what the hell I'm doing in the real world.
