2.7 has a thinner frame than the 3.5/5.0 - The 2.7 Payload Package bumps it up to the 3.5/5.0 frame, and forces 3.73s which only comes in the 9.75 rear.
Also the 2.7 runs the 8.8 rear differential and the 3.5 / 5.0 runs the 9.75 rear standard - but selecting the 3.73 standalone with the 2.7 gives you the 9.75.
So between those 2 trucks, the 3.5 has the thicker frame and both would have the 9.75 rear.
Not so much engine as it is frame, axles, suspension, etc
