Towing in the mountains

Either the 5.0L V8 or 3.5 EcoBoost will go just about as fast as you want up the hills. With the extra gears and power it’s not even comparable. The 5.0 will have about 140 extra horsepower and 50 lb ft of torque over the 5.4L 2V along with many more gears (and that’s assuming the old truck is in great tune), so I wouldn’t shy away from the V8. 6 and 10 speeds perform alot better than the old 4 speed as well. Even going to a 5.4L 3V/ 6 speed would be a huge difference over the old 2V/ 4 speed.

You definitely want a turbo engine to help with the altitude. I live in Breckenridge and have driven both trucks. The eco motor feels like it would blow the doors off the coyote at 10,000 feet above sea level

Baetis... As you can see in my signature below, I'm towing a Fifth-Wheel, and when loaded for travel it weighs right around 8,000 lbs. Last year I took I-70 out of Denver up the Ike Gauntlet and the truck pulled steady all the way up, and a time or two I actually had to let up on the gas because I was picking up speed... (I like to cruise in the low 60's). I would have no issues with the major highways through the mountains, but don't know enough about secondary highways to make a call on that.
