Will my 2016 F150 with extra springs in the
back haul an 8800 pound fifth wheel?

Probably not legally... the loaded pin weight as well as all occupants, cargo and accessories will most likely exceed your GVWR and/or GAWRs listed on your door sticker.

Check your weights carefully. A few forum members have pulled it off. If you have a lightly optioned truck with higher than average payload or an HDPP it might work.

LOL. You mean the "join forum, don't read anything, ask question that's answered multiple times" bothers you?

You need to trade your F150 in on a super duty... don't look back.

Hartrk - what these guys are trying to say is that 99%+ of the F150s on the road could not legally tow a 5th wheel with a 8,800 pound dry weight. Chances are that yours can't. The payloads on these trucks just aren't typically high enough. Payloads on F-150s range from 1,000 to over 3,000 pounds. But 99%+ have payloads below 2,000 pounds.

Very few F150's could legally tow it < 1% (if the yellow sticker inside your door has a "occupants and cargo" limit under ~2,000 pounds you probably can't do it., the more over ~2,000 it is the better your chances)
Most F250s could legally low it. However, some would be over weight (fully optioned diesels don't have a lot of payload left)
All F350s would be OK as long as you were reasonable with what you put in the truck and how heavy you loaded the front of the 5th wheel.

The forum software doesn't help. The "Ask a Question" popup that appears in the lower-right hand corner if browsing without being logged in actively encourages people to post without searching. I assume the powers that be are well aware of this and like the feature because it results in more user registrations, even if many of them post once and never return, even to read responses to their post.

Dry Weight

Hi, Hartrk, and WELCOME! to our campfire.

Sorry about some of the unfriendly responses so far. These are really nice guys that are here to help you, but they get frustrated with me answering the same or similar question over and over and over and over again.

Extra springs in back won't change the GVWR or rGAWR of your F-150. The extra "overload" springs in back might hide one of the symptoms of being overloaded, but you'll still be overloaded.

Your limiter as to how heavy a trailer you can tow is probably the GVWR and maybe the rGAWR of your "half-ton" F-150. Remember that half of a ton is 1,000 pounds. Most half-ton pickups can haul a driver and one passenger plus 1,000 pounds of hitch weight without being overloaded.

But a 5er with 8,800 pounds dry weight is probably going to exceed over 10,000 pounds when wet and loaded for an RV trip. Average weight on the kingpin ("pin") is about 20% of gross trailer weight, or 2,000 pounds for a 10,000-pound 5er. Plus you have to add about 200 pounds for the weight of a good installed 5er hitch to the pin weight to get hitch weight. So you need over 2,200 pounds of payload available for hitch weight to safely tow a 10k 5er.

Only a tiny percentage of F-150s have payload capacity over 2,200 pounds. I'll bet yours doesn't have anywhere near 2,200 pounds unused payload capacity available for hitch weight.

If you have the wonderful 3.5L EcoBoost drivetrain, then you have plenty of power to PULL a 10k trailer, but not nearly enough suspension, frame and brakes to handle the hitch weight of a 10k 5er.
