And it's a 2017, so no 10 speed. Are you saying I need a beefed up tranny cooler for any towing? If so, OEM or aftermarket? At what point should I decide to add the brake controller?

Sorry for all the questions, the last time I towed anything was a pop up Coleman with a Datsun PU about thirty years ago.
We dont know, we cant see your trucks window sticker or anything to know for sure. All we can go off of is the limited information you gave us. You need to provide the information. For a 2017 Supercab 2x4 2.7 Ecoboost with 3.15 gears there is two options:

For $95 there is the Class IV trailer hitch option:

The Class IV Trailer Hitch is standard on LARIAT, King Ranch®, Platinum, and Limited; available on XL and XLT. Towing capability up to 5,000 lbs.

Includes:
• 4-pin/7-pin wiring harness
• Class IV trailer hitch receiver
• Smart Trailer Tow Connector
For $895 there is the Trailer Tow Package:

The Trailer Tow Package is optional on F-150 XL, XLT, LARIAT, King Ranch®, Platinum, and Limited. Standard on F-150 Raptor. Towing capability up to 11,100 lbs.

Includes:
• 4-pin/7-pin wiring harness
• Auxiliary transmission oil cooler
• Class IV trailer hitch receiver
• Pro Trailer Backup Assist (not included on XL Base or Raptor)
• Tailgate LED (standard on LARIAT and higher)
• Smart Trailer Tow Connector (standard on LARIAT and higher)
• Upgraded front stabilizer bar

Does not include Trailer Tow Mirrors. Trailer Tow Mirrors are a stand-alone option and must be ordered separately.

Go look at the window sticker and if you have the $895 option then you are good to go as is. If you have the $95 then you are lacking the auxilary transmission cooler and need to add one to be able to handle a decent sized trailer. The hitch is also limited to 5000 lbs so you cannot exceed that.

You should be adding a brake controller if your trailer has electric brakes. If your trailer doesnt have brakes, dont add a controller as it will do nothing.

Most state laws require brakes on the trailer if the GVWR of the trailer is 3000 lbs. or more. If the trailer brakes are required by law by the potential weight of the trailer, then you must have a way to activate the brakes. Then you must have a trailer brake controller.

Many hitch receivers have a weight limit sticker that looks like this:

It's saying that if the hitch weight exceeds 500 lbs., then a weight distribution hitch is required. If the tongue weight is less than 500 lbs., you might choose to not install a WDH. Since a weight distribution hitch is usually at least 80 lbs., then a tongue weight of 420 lbs. added to that would reach that 500 lbs. limit.

500 lbs. added to the hitch will lift enough weight off the steer axle to reduce traction to the point of affecting steering and stopping. A weight distribution hitch will restore some or all of that weight to the steer axle.

The standard transmission oil cooler is all you need to tow up to the GCWR listed for the truck.

That is based on an XLT build out. If you have a Lariat, then the Class IV hitch and trailer connector comes standard. If you have the $895 package it will be listed on the sticker under options, which you said you don't see.

My 14 without any tow package had what looks like that cooler and it was inadequate with 3.15 gears when climbing a grade in hot thin air. If they are 3.31 or 3.55 then that cooler will be just fine. The Ecoboost works much harder with the 3.15 gears than it would with shorter gears, tons of power but the price is a hot transmission which also becomes a hot radiator. If its the 5.0 though, it will probably be fine since the engine will be racing in a much lower gear, hopefully with a locked convertor, and not generate as much heat.

EDIT: I found my window sticker for that truck. In another thread someone pointed out that tow package was listed not under options, but under Functional under standard. I had never seen that before, and guess what, my 14 did have it in the same spot. I don't know why Ford can't be consistent with their optioning. Apparently the trailer brake controller was also standard with the 501a package.

I still say though, if you have 3.15 gearing and plan to to up any grades of 6% or more, get a larger trans cooler installed, it needs it.
