Default software update for the integrated brake controller

Referring to this thread

https://www.f150forum.com/f118/trail...-fixed-415643/

I have a 2015 with factor brake controller. Had had it since new. Just bought a 2024 Casita. When towing, after about an hour or so, it will start with the same symptoms, I will get a trailer disconnected message followed shortly by a trailer brake gain message. Happens randomly, but once it starts it will continue.

Seriously doubt it has anything to do with my trucks connector as this is the first time I have towed with it. The trailer plug is very tight and has a velcro strap around it. It is not loose. Not corroded or bent either.

Is it possible to get and update the trailer brake controller myself?

I had some goofy false alarms like that on my 2020. I crawled underneath, unplugged all the various connectors, drenched with wd-40, re-assembled, and never a problem since. My guess, you have something similar going on, just a slightly poor connection.

IME that problem is most certainly in the trailer
electric brake wiring. Inspect and clean all wire connections from the plug to the trailer axle before moving on to other thoughts.

Makes you wonder why the thread I referenced had the same issue fixed with an update. That is what I am trying to find out about.

I read that thread and this is what the OP said he tried first
"As for the electrical connections, this was the first thing I did. Cleaned and greased connections from the front to the rear bumper with now avail. "

Ask a friend to tow the save unit. If it happens to them, its the trailer. If not, its your truck.

It also takes about an hour or so for this to start. If there was an issue with the trailer, I would assume it would start immediately.

Guessing nobody knows the answer to my actual question.

Guess not !! Time to do like a true DIYer and when in doubt throw it out!!! Eventually you'll toss enough $$$$ at random solutions and get it fixed.

Myself I'm a KISS guy and start with the simple solutions as several folks above have suggested.

Doubt it is related, but also have been having issues with the cruise control buttons being unresponsive.

and just found this on Ford's website

SSM 45508 2015-2016 F-150 - Trailers Equipped With Electric Brakes - Trailer Disconnected Message
Some 2015-2016 F-150 vehicles built on or before 11/04/2015 may intermittently display a Trailer Disconnected message while using a trailer with electric brakes. Inspect the 7-way trailer connectors for any signs of corrosion or excessive wear. SAE J2863 compliant connectors are the recommended trailer harness connectors. If no concerns are identified, reprogram the Trailer Brake Control module (TBC) to the latest level using IDS version 98.02 or higher. Make sure you are connected to the internet when entering module programming to obtain the latest updates. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraftservice.com. Use causal component 2C006 and applicable 12651D labor operations from Section 10 of the SLTS manual for reflash only. Refer to the Owners Guide and Towing Guide for additional information.
