In the early 1970's we used a shock hitch on our 3/4 ton farm truck. The hitch was attached to a round steel shaft that was mounted in a sealed steel tube with dual coil springs. It was helpful towing unsprung hay wagons, farm implements, grain wagons, and anhydrous ammonia trailers, especially off-road. It probably wouldn't be as useful for trailers with suspension.

So it's not useful for everyday use on the road

I've been using them for 15 plus years with a 30-foot boat, horse trailer and various cargo trailers. Have three in different drop "sizes". Do I need them? - NO Does it make sense that I put less "shock" on all the components if possible? - yes. Your decision but I'll still keep using them.

This one takes the concept to the max. I briefly considered one but the cost put me off.

The shock hitches I used to use were permanently mounted to the truck with coil springs built in the hitch rather than built into the ball mount. Similar to these: http://www.dmihitch.com/
