Hey Kyle, most trailers under a certain weight do not have to be titled in Texas. As long as you have a bill of sale, you should be good. You can choose to get a title when you register it.

To be on the safe side, you can get the tag number and call the tax office to see who it is registered to...you know, just to make sure you are not buying a stolen trailer. They can also let you know what else you need, but I think it is just a bill of sale.

Talk to your county recorder....

It depends on the state. Here in Michigan you just need a slip that proves its weight and they will give you a new registration for it.

Around here you just take it to a scale and weigh it. Bring the weight slip with you to register it. For trailers I dont have registration for I just have it weighed and then tell them its a home built trailer. Not sure if it works the same in your state though.

i have no idea in texas they seem pretty leaniant with trailers cause there are so many on the road i think im going to register it as a farm trailer

Texas if the gross trailer weight is less than 3500 it doesnt need a title . My enclo and 5x10 flat bed I just bought both had titles and when I went to register them they didnt even look at the title or bill of sale.

Ok this is a 16 foot lowboy tandem axle well over 3500 pound capacity what do I do about that

DanAustin 08-30-2012 12:27 AM

I would do bill of sale and Farm tags. I run farm tags on the flat bed and normal on my enclo. And on farm tags its like 8 bucks no taxes. Even though I did the tags here in el paso I just used my parents farm address in Loraine.

Or... Homemade built farm trailer for farm tags. My buddies car hauler that I use atleast once A week needed tags and I just swung by the dmv got and said I had a tandem axle homemade trailer with a gross weghts of 7500 lbs. You pay by weight class. Its not a homeade trailer.
