Real-world towing review -- 2.7L & 6,000lb trailer
HI. I recently towed with my '15 F150 for the first time and thought I'd share the experience.
My truck is an XL Scab, 4x4, 3.55 axle, 2.7L EB. Tow rating is 7600lbs, and payload is 1768lbs.
I towed my race car and trailer, roughly 6,000lbs, from Cleveland, OH to South Haven, MI and back last weekend. Probably had about 6-700lbs of gear and 160lbs of human. 560 miles in total, over pretty flat terrain. The truck handled the load well, I was never hurting for acceleration when I needed it, and the trans stayed in 6th for all but the few uphill portions where it never shifted lower than 5th gear. I ran 68-70mph most of the way on the interstate, with about 70 miles of 55mph two-lane, and averaged 13 mpg for the trip ( only 1 mpg better than towing with my '03 5.4L, but I get 6 mpg more when not towing ). The factory trailer-brake worked well too. The one negative is that I did notice a few times very slight trailer-sway that would oscillate a few times and then go away -- nothing major, but it's there. I've towed 5,700lbs with my '03 ( with only me as cargo ), and never noticed any sway.
Overall I was pretty pleased with the way the truck handled the trip.

Did you have the car pulled up far enough on the trailer to get adequate tongue weight so there shouldn't had been sway???

Thanks for sharing. There have been several people that say the new truck sways more than the heavier older trucks with the same load.
Can someone explain how the WD hitch works? Does it reduce the tongue weight? Do you need a new reciever? How does it move weight to the front? Curious since I may need to get one.

I have a equalizer WDH. Spend the money and get the right one the first time. I'd read up on the web as plenty of info exists on how they work.
