Unless you are really working the truck to the max and in the mountains, I really don't think Premium gas is a "have to" situation. Your truck out on the flats will do just fine. Up in the mountains it might be a different story but I'm talking extreme conditions.

For only an extra $5-$6 per fill up for premium is definitely worth it to me for peace of mind..

Not trying to be argumentative at all EcoboostKev, but how does premium give you piece of mind? It's not like this is a warranty issue, whereby Ford would be denying claims without the use of premium.

Over the life of the truck (I am assuming by your comments that you run premium all the time, although I could easily be wrong) that 5 or 6 per tank will add up to significant dollars.

I'll admit I am still on the fence about this.

So 5 bucks a tank isn't worth having your vehicle when it peels a piston from Predetonation while towing in the middle of the summer? Knock retard is only so helpful and so fast. 5 bucks is better than a month in the shop while waiting for a new shortblock and getting a Chevy aveo for a rental

Since I get 1-1.5 better fuel mileage towing with premium, the higher price is a wash and I don't have to stop for fuel as often. I use 87 the rest of the time.

Fair enough, and point well taken. We are picking up the new 5'r on Friday. The initial trip will be local for a shakedown cruise. The next trip we'll go a little further. Perhaps I'll give it a go on premium. Especially once we are in NY and overall it's cheaper anyway.

Ford recommends using premium when towing and I never know from day to day what and if i will be towing anything so that is why i run it all the time. They also say now premium bumps up the HP and torque to 385/430. The way I look at it, it's a little performance boost for the price of a happy meal and sets my mind at ease about not possibly damaging my engine when she's working.

When folks say Premium, what octane level are they talking about?
Just the next step up from 87? 89? 92? or ?
