Default question about GAWRs

My 2013 f150 has a super low payload rating of 1082lbs. I was looking at the sticker and it shows a GVWR of 7200lbs which is typcial, however my Front GAWR is 3750 and the rear GAWR is 4050. If I add those together I get 7800lbs. what is the limiting factor between the GVWR and the combo of the GAWRs?

This allows a little more of your payload weight to be either on the front or rear axle. If you bumped the GVWR up to 7800, making the payload capacity 1482, then the payload would need to be precisely balanced to not overload either axle.

Read the section of the owner's manual about calculating payload capacity - it's a lot more complex than just those 3 numbers.

That payload is due to the loaded truck you bought. Keep in mind that from the payload you have to subtract anything you added to the truck, like that Extang cover, floor mats, etc. Then 100 pounds for a weight distribution hitch. Then you and all passengers and pets, plus anything they bring with them into the truck. Then divide the remaining number by .13 and that's the max LOADED trailer you can tow.

The chassis as a whole is only rated at 7200lbs by Ford. They could have chosen this limit due to frame strength, impact on handling, the ability of the suspension to handle a dynamic load in a corner (things like presence and size of anti-sway bar). Any or all of these could be the limiting factor and I'm sure there are other potential limiters that I have not listed.

It is normal for the sum of the GAWR to exceed the GVWR. Otherwise the GVWR would be nearly unattainable without perfect balance.

awesome, thanks guys for the info. I was just trying to learn a little more about the truck. Not new to towing, just new to a newer vehicle. Thanks again!
