Default Payload capacity on yellow door sticker

I test drove a 2019 F150 Lariat 4X4 with a max tow package today and was disappointed to see that the payload capacity listed on the yellow sticker inside the door was only 16668 lbs. When I expressed disappointment that the payload capacity was less than we needed to tow a 25 foot Airstream the salesman told me that the yellow sticker just listed to payload capacity of the cab and showed me a brochure listing a payload capacity of 2030 lbs. Am I being lied to?

Salesmen are trained and bred to Bull$#!t a way into a sale. Trust the sticker, not the guy making a commission.

The more options you have the lower it goes. Mine is only 1577.

What is your trailers hitch weight? Brochure for the 25' one online shows ~900 with LP.

1668 should be plenty for an airstream, unless you plan to carry heavy weights in the cab too. I'm hauling 6400 pound TT with 1557 payload and have 400 to spare.

Yes. That is about right. Loaded and carrying water a 25 ft AS will often have a tongue weight of about 1100 lbs.

So, as long as the passengers don't weigh more than 500 lbs or so, he's good to go. He would be high on the percentage of available payload capacity used, but very low on the towing capacity.

I think many people over stress these low payloads. In my case, even once I factor the family and 10% tongue weight I can tow something in the 10,000 lb neighborhood. That's still a LOT of weight.

Owners just need to be mindful about where they put the load. If you have 500 lbs of luggage somehow, put it in the trailer.

Not only would I run from that dealer, I would talk to the sales manager about the salesman lying to you.
