Default New Boat! What do I need to tow it???

Hi all,

I have a 2016 3.5 EB with the max tow package. We just purchased a boat and all told, with trailer, it should weigh about 7400lbs fully loaded with full gas tank, including trailer, engines, etc. I've towed things before, but never had to set up my own rig.

Since I have the max tow package, do I want any additional stabilizers/springs for the rear suspension?

Any suggestions for a towing hitch setup? I have a 2" receiver (the one that comes with the max tow package). I think the trailer is a 2 5/16" ball.

Should I increase PSI in my tires? How much more? What is the formula for this? Are the front tires pumped up as well?

What else do I need to know? What other mods might I want to consider?
Words of wisdom?

Thanks in advance. I tried searching a bit, but didn't find the answers I was looking for. Hoping you all can help.

It's always good to run LT tires when towing over 5K pounds. If the truck squats any with the trailer hooked up air bags in the rear will level things out. Air Ride or Firestone work well. I used the ball off son in laws truck that was also over 2 inches so whatever the coupler on the trailer calls for go with that. Use the tow haul mode and limit speed to 55-60 mph on tires aired up to the max on sidewall. Surge brakes on heavy boat trailers can drive you nuts on take offs so take it easy!

Here's a pic of the '13 Ecoboost I had towing my son in laws 9K pound boat. Had the truck squatting but only had to tow 50 miles. I have a '17 dually that pulls it easily so that problem is corrected.

Thanks PawPaw! I take delivery of the boat in two weeks, so I have time to install the airbags, but I don't know if I need them.

Nice rig!

Nice rig!
Here is our 2015 /w about 7000lbs of boat behind it. Will give you an idea of how the truck will handle that weight boat. The back end does sag a bit, but nothing horrible. I have not gotten a chance to get a tongue weight on the trailer, but plan to before we tow it this season.

Just hook and go, shouldn't need anything special for hauling a boat. At the most the truck will be level once hooked up(reason trucks have rake after all).

Agree with hook and go for the most part. Boats tow really nice. Only caveat is that some have higher tongue weight than expected in which case you may want some sort of WDH - although I don't know what might be compatible with the hitch. If the tongue weight is less than 500 pounds I wouldn't worry about the WDH.

I’m not sure how to paste a link here, but there’s a thread called “Boat Towing Thread” under Towing/Hauling/Plowing. There’s some good information there, especially to see what other folks are towing and what their set up is. By the way, I tow a 6000 pound boat with a 3.5 EB & Max Tow. I hook and go and have zero issues.
