The weight of whatever upgrades/accessories he's added will reduce it as well. It sounds like he's added a few things.

You need to stop looking at UVW, and look at GVWR of the trailer. That truck stick with 8000 GROSS or less. Mine is 7600# GVWR, has a TW of 630# dry and 764# with gear and full FWT. It comes in at 6100# with our gear and full FWT. My payload is 1420#, and with me, and a topper, I have about 1000# to play with, so VERY easy to go over GAWR and GVWR. I wouldn't mind being a little over GVWR, but going over GAWR scares me, and I do whatever I can to remove extra axle weight.
