They're self contained, easy set up/tear down and they get you off the ground. If you're overlanding, you may not always be able to find a decent, suitable area to set up a tent on the ground.

Lets be serious now, if you can drive your F150 over it, you can definitely set a tent on it.

I don't disagree that you wouldn't be able to set a tent on it, but it certainly won't be the most comfortable place to sleep. Think about rocky terrain, snow, mud. Being off the ground on a level, stable platform is better in a lot of situations.
