I've got this:

Boat and trailer combined weigh about 500 pounds.

In 4 days, I'm driving up to Iowa to take delivery of this bad boy.

2014 Heartland Wilderness 2175 RB. 4648 pounds dry, 490 hitch.

I want to do this (only smaller):

I sure hope this works. I've put a little bit of money into this concept.

Check your local laws. Most won't allow both trailers to be bumper pull; the first one has to be a fifth wheel. Also some have a limit on total length of the road train.

Perhaps you live in the state of "most" where such local laws may prohibit towing double trailers.

Checking the map, actually most states allow double towing. Of all the states that allow double towing, none require fifth wheel configuration. All have a maximum allowable total length of 65 feet. (Maybe Alaska is longer.)

I'm Canadian and apparently very uninformed about US laws. I'm really surprised that all those states not only allow double towing but allow double towing WITHOUT the first one being a fifth wheel.

That map can't be accurate. I double tow in Wisconsin. First one HAS to be a gooseneck or 5th wheel. That map is saying we just allow it. I'm not sure how many states allow double tow with 2 bumpers.

They even took away the need for a permit. <65 feet

I've double towed with the boat or ATV about 6 times now. Cops never even look twice.

I also know Minnesota has the same law but they can be 75 feet long.

ok this must be off! Washington state allows truckers to pull triples, and every other is set at 70' tractor bumper to trailer bumper. now California requires the Pearson to have a class a license. trailer must be a fifth wheel and have a class three tow hitch set up on it frame for the second trailer. but states all across the country will pull you over if your pulling this and the see you its just such a strange site.

Arizona requires that the first trailer be a 5th wheel, and length no more than 65 feet total.

It would be nice if the states would get a common set of towing laws.

The following is a nice presentation, state-by-state. I can't vouch for its accuracy.

http://towingworld.com/towinglaws.cfm

A few states and provinces require 5th wheel on first trailer. (Footnote 43)

Only with fifth-wheel trailer in AZ, IL, MI, MN, MB (maximum length 23 m.), SK and YT.

Fortunately, my range of travel does not include those states.

I don't think that "such a strange sight" is just cause for pulling over a motorist.
