how to get smoother ride in my F150 Super Crew cab pulling an 18ft camper trailerer
I have a 2009 F150 Super Crew Cab that pulls my 2015 Forest River 18 Foot camper trailer. I have installed new shocks and added a distribution hitch. The trailer weighs only 4600 pounds dry. My 150 has a 3.73 gear ratio and can pull up to 11,000 pounds. I have no trouble pulling my trailer. The ride on a level highway is fine, but once I drive on some rougher roads, the ride is terrible! How can I make this truck give me a smoother ride on rough roads? Would adding air shocks help? what would be the cost to convert and do this? thanks. Gerry

Tough to get a Cadillac ride from a truck on rough roads.
Buddy of mine says if you drive fast on rough roads your wheels don't have time to follow the bumps so it smooths out the ride. I've never tried it. |
Is the rough ride being referred to loaded with the trailer, or unladen? If unladen, sometimes a little weight in the bed over the light rear axle can help take some of the bounce or shimmy away. If with trailer, it could be a combination of how the truck and hitch are setup or how the trailer is suspended or loaded.

SLOW DOWN......
Allow the suspension to work through the bumps and potholes. |

Thank you for your reply. Do you have this on your truck now?

What air pressure are you running? If stock tires, run per the door jam, maybe a bit more on the rears. Trailer, don't necessarily run max tire pressure, if stock tires, run as recommended or get out the chart that shows weight / tire / pressure recommendations.

When you say a rough road, are you talking a rough paved road or like a dirt road/trail?
