How do I load up 15-20 10' wood planks
Is there a safe and clean way to haul 15 to 20 wood planks of 10 feet length from Home depot ? I have a 5-1/2 bed with step in tailgate. Wonder if anyone has designed a cheap wooden support that can hold the weight at tailgate

Put a board or something at the back of the bed, in front of the tailgate to take the weight if it's a concern, then strap the boards together, and into the front and back of the bed.
Tie a red ribbon around the boards at the back and don't drive like an idiot.

A cop stopped me once and gave me warning that my license plate was not visible to him. I was like "waaat... "
Since then I am loading stuff with tailgate up but long stuff gets a little weird ..

When I carry that much lumber, I leave the tailgate down, use strong straps around the boards to keep them together, and rope from the straps to the tie-downs inside the bed to prevent the whole thing from sliding out when going up a hill. Our law requires a red flag if the lumber exceeds 3' beyond the bumper. I would not put more than about 2 layers of them onto the tailgate when raised, over that could be too much weight for the hinges. Unfortunately I have never seen any kind of weight limit specified by Ford for the tailgate up or down.

If the wood sticks out past the tailgate, always remember to put a red flag or a red rag on the end to signal other people that there is an object sticking out for safety.

Cheap insurance, easy to use, and keeps the load safe.

If I had to haul anything 8' or longer in a pickup with 5.5' bed, I would haul it on my 16' flatbed utility trailer.

Well, not everyone has a nice 16' flatbed sitting around! I have my 6x12 enclosed for long things and sheet goods if I ever need it. I would just have to move the planes out first.
