Hitch buying time. Looking for opinions
I am about to order a new WDH setup with integrated sway. My old Blue Ox had no sway control- but I think it is something I would like in the new hitch setup. I have narrowed it down to the Equal-i-zer and the Reese Strait-Line Dual Cam. I am just wondering about preferences of other members. Both are fairly straight forward. I really like the fact that you don't have to drill the a-frame for the equal-i-zer.
Couple things I have to wonder about though on both products. For the Reese, what are the chances of that bar hopping off the cam if you turn too tight by accident? It's tough to tell what kind of turning radius you will actually have.
For the Equl-i-zer- how well does the sway control work? Since it's a friction control, I understand that will only handle sway after the fact, but the company says it will prevent it as well. Also- what are the tendencies for the retainers for the bars in the L-Brackets to wear or break?
I guess the TT info would be relevant. 26' Jayfeather 5900GVWR.

I use the Reese cam model. The cam won't pop off the bar when turning. There doesn't seem to be any limit on how tight you can turn. One down side is that the hitch is a bit loud when turning. To solve this I spray on a dry lubricant before hitching up. By a can and keep it close. Otherwise I really like it.
I pull a 30' 8200lb travel trailer.

I used an equalizer hitch for 6 years with our Airstream and was flawless. Honestly can't find a single thing to complain about - it's a great product and works as advertised. We've upgraded to a much larger TT for this year and made the "investment" on a ProPride hitch. I haven't towed with it as yet (winter) but the physics of the hitch was a no-brainer for us and "worth" the extra money.
From my understanding Reese and Equalizer are friction based systems. So, they do prevent trailer sway until such time as the sway forces exceed the prevention limits. The trailer and situation is the big variable there, I would suggest as long as you are within conservative guidelines on your TT/TV you'll be very happy with either setup

Damn, going through Equal-i-zer site, looks like the jump is from 600lbs to 1000lbs. Even with a fully loaded trailer to max GVWR and 15% tongue weight, I will only hit 885lbs on the tongue. So that might leave Equal-i-zer out of the running since I won't get to that point and it might be too much at 1000lbs
Looks like it's going to be Reese.

Good comments. I too am now in the market for a WDH for my horse trailer. It looks like for this upcoming show season we will be regularly also hauling one of our boarder's horses. This will bump the total loaded trailer weight over the 5000 lbs WC capacity of our hitch.
Any different recommendtations for a horse trailer versus a TT? Any other considerations?
