Default Help me build a 2013 F150 for my camping/towing needs

Hi, I'm returning to the F150 Forum after about 3 years gone. Had a '97 5.4 XLT Supercab for years that I used to tow a race car.. My wife got me a Cayenne for my 60th B-Day, so there went the F150!! We have since retired and, being flyfisher folks..., we are looking at getting a 2013 F150 that would be setup to carry a Lance truck camper, dry weight about 1880#, but be able to also pull an enclosed trailer of max weight of under 6000# on race weekends. Max distance I would tow the racecar with the truck camper on the F150 is about 230 miles one way. Searched the site, but didn't really find anything apropos my needs...

So, I'm looking for help in specing out this 2013 F150, we like the 3.5 ecoboost motor and supercab setups as well as the XLT trim. Is there a way to safely build an F150 for this role?
Please don't tell me to get an F250 as it might be best, but it is simply to big, mileage is bad, the wife won't have it, and most of the time it will be the camper alone.
Thanks for your help and interest!

eco boost lariat w/ max tow 11,100 max towing but 2000 payload. I say you opt for HD payload package+ max tow as itll net you the most payload and towing as to be under all maximums when hauling both camper and trailer

Fergidaboudit!!!

Take a look at this info - scroll down to page 4 to see info on bed-mounted slide-in campers:

http://www.ford.com/resources/ford/g...rv&tt_f150.pdf

You can see that a supercab XLT requires the 8 foot bed, and you can see that in addition to the heavy-duty payload option, the EB engine requires the max trailer tow package as well.

Even with all that, it looks like the max cargo weight (with MINIMUM equipment) is well below even your camper's dry weight.

It appears the max cargo weight of a 4x2 is 1826 lbs, and a 4x4 is more than 300 lbs less.

It does say that the max weight listed includes a 150 lb person in each seat, so if it's just you and your wife you could add in a few hundred lbs back into the max cargo weight.

However, XLT trim will probably add a couple hundred lbs of weight - so subtract a couple hundred from max cargo weight for that.

Even if you could could barely carry the dry camper, your 6000 lb trailer will have at least a 600 lb tongue weight, which will put you waaaay over the max cargo weight.

I don't see any way that an XLT supercab is going to work for what you want to do.

Plus - with all that weight and drag and a 3.73 rear end, I don't think you'll get gas mileage near as good as a diesel F250 would get.

IMHO you need A LOT more truck for a camper that weighs well more than 2,000 lbs wet.

Just MHO, YMMV!

Bob

Like people are saying, your problem will be payload.

According to the 2013 brochure, the max payload you can have a SCab 4x4 Ecoboost (with HD payload package), 8' bed, is 2390#. Options will reduce that.

With that payload it will be easy to tow your trailer.

But is it enough for your camper when loaded up with water, propane, batteries and gear? And your truck loaded up with you, the wife and whatever?

Doable with the HD payload option, but you'll have to watch your weight.

EDIT: just realized you want to tow your trailer at the same time? No, not good. You'll be waaaay over. That's superduty country.

Thanks for all the quick and informative replies!!! Never thought it would be so complicated....

Anyway, as I did the math, looks like Steve's correct that a reg cab as he described is the only one that might, I say, might work...

Thanks again!

It looks really boarder line even if you do the reg cab 8ft bed. If you decide to do it I recommend that you add an aftermarket rear sway bar. It will help help keep the high center of gravity under control in the turns. I believe you would need Hellwig 7705 (double check the number) 1-1/8" rear sway bar.

Found a light weight truck camper that is about 1800 # wet that will more than meet my needs! So a 4/2 supercab shortbed should be fine. I will add a custom sway bar and that should make the nut...

Thanks again for the info!

I'll be pulling a 20 ft race car trailer to the track and stay in the truck camper...
