I would definitely go with the HD payload. Why? Because you may decide to upgrade your TT? Or you may want to throw a golf cart in the bed.

The hd payload also gives erated tires, which are a stiffer ride.

I added bags to mine to level it out. If I had it to do over with, HD payload all the way.

The money part of the payload package isn't what bothers me its the fact that in order to get payload package I need a long bed, 17" rims, and lariat... All of which I don't care for the looks of. I will deal with it if it makes towing that much better, but if I can safely tow with a max tow fx4 5.5' bed I'd much rather do so for the fun factor of the daily driver when I'm not towing

The 6.5ft bed comes in handy all the time too. The 5.5ft bed is the only part of my truck i dont like. And cant you get thesr options on another model like xlt?

I've got a 2012 xlt screw right now with 5.5' bed. I was pretty upset when the ecoboost came out a few months after I bought mine!

If he is pulling a heavy bumper pull travel trailer that is what the max tow package is designed for.

I'm trying to say that if is trailer is under the max tow package tow rating and the only thing he is worried about is squat in the rear, adding airbags keeps myself/ customers/ and friends happy driving our FX4's. It just seemed that was his preference. Just because as you stated "his trailer is the same as mine but 3' longer" doesn't tell us anything. What is the tongue weight of the trailer and dry/loaded weights? That is what is important.
Well listening to you explains clearly that you certainly are a salesman... So what you are saying is as long as his trailer is under his tow rating(11,200lbs) he is fine?? And if his *** end is sagging on the ground throw some air bags in there and your good to go?? He SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT THE THE SQUAT IN THE REAR!!! Since the truck is a 1/2 ton you need to worry about making sure your under the trucks GVWR and rear axle weight ratings NOT the tow rating.
I have the max tow on my truck with a GVWR of 7700lbs. My trailer is a
2012 Outback 292BH
dry weight- 6500lbs
dry hitch-850lbs
gvwr-8200lbs
I loaded my truck and trailer ready to camp and brought it to my local Cat scale to have it weighed. My truck weighed 7540lbs hooked to the trailer with the wife and I and 2 kids. The kids bikes and weber Q grill is all i had in the bed, and a full tank of fuel. I am just 160lbs under my GVWR of the truck. My trailer only weighed 7500lbs loaded. My truck is almost maxed out and I'm not anywhere near my max tow rating of 11,200lbs!! I do apologizes for ASSUMING the OP's trailer tongue weight was heavier than mine, since i new his was 3 feet longer and his model was 312BH compared to my 292bh I just figured it had to be heavier.
I still believe the OP is better off getting the HD pkg if he is buying new.

By the books your MAX TOW package gives you a tongue rating with a weigh distributing hitch of 1,130 lbs so you are fine there. The weight is well under the ratings of the max tow package.

You may add up to 1500 lbs of extra gear camping with fuel/propane/water. I would feel very comfortable at that weight and feel that you still will have room to grow and add a wheeler to the carrying weight. Like I first mentioned if you're like me I'd add airbags for the added stability and eliminate the rear end sag for the little initial investment.
If he added 1500lbs to the trailer weight and maxed out he trailers GVWR(9000lbs) that's fine just as long as he doesn't load a bunch of that weight in the front of the trailer. Filling the front water tank alone will obviously add to his tongue weight! Nevermind anything in the front storage compartments. I don't understand how you think he will have room to "GROW" and add a "WHEELER" to the carrying weight?????I'm assuming you are talking about a 400-500lb ATV??? Do you not even consider the trucks payload rating into any of your figures??? Or is it just the tow rating you concentrate on??
P.S.- Your brother-in -law is probably over his trucks GVWR.....

Bingo once again.

I think we are dealing with someone that knows numbers, but has no practical experience in towing, loading, or specing a TV and TT combo.

As anyone who deals with TT on a regular basis knows, you can very easily throw 20% tongue weight on a TT that has good storage up front. Heck, some TT floor plans can have 15-20% tongue weight up front if front kitchen.

To throw blanket statements about TT weights is simply not a good way todo it.
