Hey guys! I just got a Husky Round bar WD Hitch for my 28' TT, GVWR: 7400lbs.
I'm gonna go and get it all hooked up to the trailer this weekend.
My question is do I need to grease the ball or should I Not do it at all?

I am at my 3rd TT and I never did. Not sure what the benefit would be.

Grit, sand, etc. will stick to the grease. I spray WD-40 on it occasionally.

I do, but i normally use fresh grease every trip to help cut down on the grit issue. Just enough to help the lock slide and keep it quit.

This is what I do. I wipe the old grease off the ball first, then apply a fresh coat.


I like my ball clean and lubricated...

It shouldn't be necessary on a new ball & tongue. If the tongue is rusty, some grease will keep it quiet as you drive, and allow smoother articulation. If the ball is rusty, replace it. If new parts are noisy or bind, the tongue is too tight.

From Airstream FAQ regarding greasing your ball: I do this pretty much with mine.
You should apply a thin coating of grease (such as Reese Hitch Ball Lube) over the surface of the hitch ball to prevent as much friction as possible. There is nothing more awful than the sound of metal against metal when turning.
You will want to clean the hitch ball monthly and apply a new coating of grease. At the same time you will want to clean out the coupler (ball socket and ball clamp) and apply a thin coating of grease.
While you are already down on your hands and knees, lubricate any moving parts on the coupler with SAE 30 weight oil. It also is a good time to be checking for any wear or damage that may have occurred to the hitch ball or coupler.
When you are not towing, cover the hitch ball with some type of cover such as a tennis ball or a rubber boot that is especially designed for the ball.

I do grease the ball. As someone else mentioned, before a camping weekend, I wipe it clean and put some new grease on before hooking up. Once the TT is parked at the campsite and I drive around somewhere, I will take note if the dirt roads are kicking up a lot of dust. If so, I'll redo it before heading home. Otherwise I leave it until the next trip. I also leave the grease on once I'm home and only clean it off right before applying more since it takes all the dirt with it. I'm not concerned about having a greasy ball lol If someone gets grease on their pants from it, then they were walking too close to my truck anyways.
