I think you have that backwards...

How the hell are we supposed to be able to tell from the top? We can't tell how heavy the wood is or any of that. Also, I'd hope nobody was behind you without something holding that wood in your trailer

It has a back gate haha. And it was quite heavy. My point was I'm not about to go weigh it at a truck stop to determine if I was in the boundaries. I just do what seems reasonable and prudent.

Only becomes a problem if you have an accident and the insurance company suspects you might have been overloaded at the time. Then you are about to enter into litigious hell.

At times??? That means nothing! Thats like saying you may have been drunk at times. Were you drunk (overloaded) when the accident happened? They could care less if you were drunk last weekend. Overloaded only applies to what your licence is registered for. Course their are also things like farm use rules that allow basically anything you want as long as you don't overload the axle weight rating for the road. I picked the ford 1/2 ton because of its payload and for the truck I'm pretty happy. If my old '91 (with factory overload option that is no more these days) can handle it for over 20 years before the frame cracking I sure hope an '08 can do the same with less gooseneck use for a few years.

He said "at the time". If you are overloaded and get in an accident, be ready to go through hell about it. Yes there are safety margins built in but it's exactly that, for safety. If you go over that then there is no safety margin, end of story. If you need to haul outside of your vehicle's capabilities, get a bigger vehicle or hire someone else to do it. I'd rather you be broke than kill somebody and I'm sure you would too.

Here in North East PA with the gas industry, DOT has been crazy strict on everything doing with over weight and payloads. Stopping every truck and just about every truck getting a ticket. I am afraid to hook a trailer up half the time with these guys anymore. If they can't find something they make you unhook check the ball check the integrity of the hitch the truck the brakes. My buddy got stopped and they pulled the wheel and caliper off his trailer and check the thickness of the pads. Needless to say he ended up with a ticket for 1100$ 1 $ per pound overweight, Lucky it was a company truck and they took care of it. He also checks the weight before he hauls something for them again.
