Wind does make a difference. Two years ago we drove my 4X4 DC Tacoma from GA to the Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce Canyon NP and back. Overall I averaged 20mpg for the trip, but 2-3 tanks on 2 lane roads with light traffic and speeds under 60 mph I got 22-23 mpg. On the way back I hit a strong headwind from Denver to Kansas City. Fuel mileage dropped to 16 over that stretch, then back to 20+ the rest of the way home.

I often pull a 14' utility trailer with 2 ATV's on it. Weight is probably closer to 2000-2500 with the ATV's extra fuel, and other gear. I've had several 500+ mile road trips with my 14 F-150 pulling that trailer. I have the 5.0,, 4X4 and Supercrew cab. On the road I get 15 mpg with that. But once I get where I'm going there is a lot of driving not conducive to good fuel mileage. I'll be 10 or less for a good bit of that which ruins the overall mileage for the trip.

I've been in some head winds that made a massive difference. My ecoboost can usually tow up to a 2-3% grade before it downshifts to 5th but I had a headwind coming back from St George UT that had the truck sitting in 5th the entire ride, even on totally flat ground. I was only getting about 7mpg where I would normally get 9.5-10mpg. I tow at 70mph usually because the speed limit is 80 and I dont wanna get steam rolled by some joker doing 90.

I just towed my 7x14 trailer with my mower, aerator, 300+ lbs of fertilizer, and my spreader on a 100 mile round trip to my brothers house the other day. Total weight was about 3000 lbs. Filled up after about 250 miles on the tank and 100 was towing. Averaged 15.3 for the tank. I was kind of surprised as I was expecting worse. Oh-the noises that Coyote makes when towing just gets me every time. Love the Super 10 Flowmaster!
