First time f150 towing question

Thanks for the input. An Ottawa member offered me a used WDH which would do the trick. Just waiting for his response. Today I towed the trailer to a close campground (50mi) for a test weekend. It seemed very good for now. Although it was only 50 miles I averaged 12 mpg (us) for the tow.

Your towing mpg sounds kind of low. Seems like, with your towing pkg & gears, that you would have done better. Was the area hilly where you were towing? Were you using Tow/Haul?

Looks like an EB so 12MPG is actually really good MPG for towing. Mine only got 11 pulling a 12x6 enclosed single axle. Its all that aerodynamic drag that sucks the gas. The 5.0 gets better MPG towing, but can't pull a grade as well as the EB. Trade off.

Depends on the budget, it its $300 or less, a Round bar like a Husky works well for trailers up to 28' and 7000 pounds, Above that though, you would be better off spending the $500+ for an Equalizer.
I use a Husky RB with one sway bar for my Coleman ct274BH, and it pulls great, no sway, and crosswinds move the entire rig, not just the trailer, so it has been very stable. Towed about 4000 miles with it last year after getting the trailer.

12 mpg towing is in the range I see towing our small TT. Depending upon terrain and wind direction it will run anywhere from 9 to 13 mpg. In the relatively flat coastal plain of the S.E. with no real wind I average 12 mpg at 65 mph. Surprisingly this is very similar to what we saw with our old 2001 Explorer.

Definitely worth checking for used hitches in your area as well. I picked up an Equalizer hitch locally in great condition for $150, the guy was just done with travel trailers and no longer wanted it. Might also find someone who is switching to fifth wheels.
