If one needs an HDPP truck I think they should probably be getting a SD

Agree, but a properly-equipped F-150 with HDPP can handle an 8k trailer, provided you don't try to haul a lot of weight in the truck when towing. A SuperDuty would have to have the PowerStoke Diesel (PSD) engine to perform better than the 3.5L EcoBoost engine when dragging an 8k trailer, and so that SuperDuty would cost an arm and a leg more than the comparably-equipped F-150.

2017 F-150 XLT SuperCrew 4x2 with 3.5L EcoBoost engine, 6.5' bed, XLT base equipment group 300A, Heavy-Duty Payload Package and tow mirrors with required options to get HDPP and tow mirrors:
$44,535 MSRP

2017 F-250 XLT 4x2 CrewCab with 6.75' bed and PSD = $51,025 MSRP, or
6,490 additional MSRP.
