How ridiculous is that!!! With my family of 4 and a weeks worth of groceries i would be overloaded!! Now that's a RAM for ya!! Just another reason why Ford is the best selling pickup...

RAM's are notorious for that. And they're coming out with a nice V-6 diesel sometime soon that will challenge the Ecoboost's low-end torque and definitely improve on its mileage. But it'll be heavier, so if they don't improve the payload of their half-ton trucks, it will be a total waste of effort.

Holy ****, I thought my Ram low! Longhorns are even lower than the Laramies

Well, he does have a heated steering wheel, so there's that

Just got a 2013 Screw XTL 4x4 5.5 EB with the Max Tow and the 302A package. Door sticker has 1820 Lbs. I loaded it up with the family and a full tank of gas and went to the scales. It's hard to really apply that 1820 Lbs as I'm not really sure where to use it in any formula. However based on the GVWR(7650) - GVW(6350) i'm left with 1300 Lbs (+-50Lbs for scale error). This is with 4 kids (4 - 8) and my wife. If we didn't have that extra payload with the max tow I'd have the same tow capabilities as my 2008 Expedition EL with the 5.4, if not less.
I almost made that error mid way through sales talk before I caught it as an after thought. Took a bit longer for them to find a rig with the max tow. I can just image how many don;t catch that. Even the sale rep didn't seem to be fully up to speed on this and was all about the 11,000k tow a "properly equipped" truck can do. I'd be some pissed if I bought that Ram unit.

One important factor that is on that door sticker is the rating of the tire. My 2012 screw lariat 4X4 with max trailer tow 145" WB has LT 275 65 18 Wrangler. Load C (113). My rating for payload is 1703 lbs. If I was to upgrade to an E / F rated 10 / 12 ply (123) I'm sure this would increase my payload.

Is the HD pkg giving better tires with better springs??

Not necessarily if the tires aren't the weak link. Your payload is determined by the weakest link in a myriad of parts. And even though these upgrades will raise your technical payload ability, it won't change the actual vs. GVWR of the truck according to your sticker.

HD pack has better tires, 7 lug LT wheels, upgraded axle, springs I suspect, maybe shackles and mounts and shocks as well I would think.

In addition to the extra rear leaf spring, 7-lug wheels and load range E tires, the HD payload front springs are 30-40% stiffer than a standard F150. Shocks are stiffer as well.

A few of the items can be added fairly easily but you don't have the 7-lug hardware.
