Crossed the coastal range without experiencing the issue, thanks for the info. If it comes up again it looks like it's easy to diagnose and take care of.

I was with a friend who was pulling a car on a uhaul front wheel trailer uphill and snapped the driveshaft. I heard the same type of sound and was still going when the shaft snapped. It was rubbing against a crossmember. So check your driveshaft for anwear spot.
