Been researching for several days trying to determine my actual tow capacity. My truck is factory equipped as follows:

2016 F150 Screw 2WD 5.5 bed
Sport Pkg wheels and tires
5.0
3.55 ELD
Tow pkg
6800 gvwr
Integrated Brake Controller

It seems with the addition of the brake controller and 3.55 ELD I basically have the Max tow pkg minus the upgraded rear bumper. I know I can safely tow my 5,600 lb boat/trailer but was asked to tow a 9,000 lb trailer a short distance for a friend. While I'm confident that the truck is capable I can't find any info on my actual tow capacity. Thanks in advance.

What does the yellow payload sticker on your doorjamb say? 9,000 is very unlikely to be within specs.

looking at the 2016 Tow guide, it looks like 8,400lb for a 4x2 Screw 3.55 5.0 with the sport package. If you did not have the sport package it would be 10,100.

9,000lb at 15% is only 1350lb (which is however more than the hitch is rated to carry), add 100 for the hitch and you're 1450. A lot of these trucks have ~1800lb available payload. So while Ricktwuhk's question is valid and needs to be considered, payload may not have been an issue so long as you were alone and did not have a ton of crap in your truck. The limiting factor would have been either GVWR (lack of payload) or GCWR.

Something weird though because the sport package did not have a separate rating in 2015 and they don't in 2017, just 2016. Unfortunately, because you have a 2016, you would be over the tow rating and over GCVWR.

As for your comment about essentially having the max tow package...thing is you either have the package (and the ratings that come with it) or you don't...

You might run into an issue with the 500 lb limit on the tongue if you don't have a WDH.

yep, as far as "rated to tow" you have to go with the lowest limiting factor;

Hitch weight
payload (gvwr)
gcwr
gawr Fr & Rr
length
etc.

Can your truck tow that? certainly. Take it easy. Slow to accelerate, slow to brake, slow to turn... And you'll probably be OK.

Thanks for the quick responses. Payload from the sticker is 2067. The 9,000 pound trailer is a loaded weight so he may have to drain his water tank and remove his dirt bikes. The distance is less than 10 miles in mostly flat surface streets. I knew it was cutting it close that's why I started researching. I bought the truck knowing I was safe towing my combo...never considered towing anything much heavier with a 1/2 ton. Thanks again for eveyone's input.

Yep, draining the water would probably do it. Assuming this doesn't make the tongue too light. Water is pretty heavy.

Not sure how big his tank is but at 8lbs/gallon it does add up quick. Any insight into the difference in towing with the Sport Pkg? Seems to be a large difference for an appearance pkg. Could it be the tire and wheel combo?

Wheels and tires are rated the same as the other combinations...and more than the rear axle is rated to carry.

Oh, and before Smokeywren chimes in, go look for his thread about when he towed something like 20k lb several hundred miles across TX then bragged about how well his 3.5EB handled it...most of the time he tells everyone they will be overloaded with anything more than a ~5k trailer because well, he is.
