Default Clank During Towing

When towing my boat there is a clank coming from the rear differential area when accelerating quickly from stop. I was standing outside the truck observing with a buddy driving and was definitively able to rule out anything coming from the boat, trailer, ball, hitch, receiver etc... And there are no surge brakes on the truck. It is definitely coming from the diff area. I jacked the whole rear of the truck, put it in neutral and spun one of the tires. There is about 1/2" to 3/4" play before the other tire spins. Am I correct to assume the differential needs service and if so any idea on average if this is a major repair? Thanks

Don't do that........also check U joints and grease the splines where the drive shaft slides.

Yes, I'll bet it is a sticking driveshaft yoke.

U joints appear to be good. If it's a sticking yolk, would it make a clank at the diff?

I think that it could as the differential would be torqued about the line of the axles. This could result in the ring gear getting smacked around a bit.

How old is the truck? Seems like I had an issue with my 2012 right after I bought it that involved the yoke. Whatever the issue was (3 years ago), it was common and was under warranty. No issues since repairs.
