Default Cantilever extension for truck racks

Just looking at possibilities for carrying a 16' canoe. Are there makes other than TracRac that offer an extension over the cab?

Build a frame out of 2x4's? Did it to carry a bunch of 16' 2x8's one time.

Price seems resonable if it comes with a warranty and is built strong. You can get a china knock off but the quality may be shotty and may snap with fatigue.

Or get a regular roof-mount rack for the front and something else (adjustable height) for the rear? Might be cheaper ...

The front bar for my roof rack goes on top on the cab, not the bed sides. Therefore you can place it anywhere on the roof for different items.

not sure what your cab size is, but when I carried a 16.5' stripper canoe on our SCrew I just used the foam pads under the canoe, onto the roof. Distributes the weight very well, left no marks, or indentations, and with a 3point strap front and back it carried fine at 110kph down the highway.
On the way back we had some mean sidewinds, so I used 1 extra rachet strap over the middle, to the front stake pockets.

I had built a proper metal rack to use, but after seeing how well the pads worked, I left it at home.

Have you looked at these http://www.austinkayak.com/products/...-Extender.html and then a front headache rack, or just use the foam bocks.

Tough to see, but I use a pair of Yakima Outdoorsman racks I picked up off of Craigslist. Not cantilevered, but it's a wider spacing than my Envoy roof rack was. You can buy 1 Outdoorsman rack and a set of door / roof mounts if you want the front bar over the cab. 16' Dagger Royalex.
