Ball mount recommendations for the beginner?

I have just (successfully) completed my first trip with the rented trailer. Thanks again to everyone for the great advice!
I towed ~3500lb Flagstaff 23FB trailer. Not for too far and not too fast The hitch worked well, I had no problems mounting and connecting everything. The guy who owns the rental place also helped me a lot, but when going back I have done it all by myself.
Now I realize that backing up with the trailer requires some extra training. Pro Trailer Backup Assist function is useless unless you configure the trailer, obviously. I did not have time to do it for the rental one - this time at least.
I have noticed that in "tow/haul" mode the truck uses the engine to brake so I could notice it. I could see that when I slowly pushed the brake, it clearly downshifted more aggressively, making more noise at 3K RPM. I did adjust the trailer brake gain (ended up with 7.0) and the trailer's brakes worked correctly.
Next trip will be longer
