It's not easy to find some of this info.
Not questioning or doubting anyone - just asking -
Why would an HD 7 lug use the 9.75"?
I couldn't find an article I once read. It called out the Sterling 10.5 on an F150 as being a very slightly scaled down Dana 60. Do I recall that correctly?
I installed a Mag-Hytec cover which is spec'd for the Sterling 10.5.

Go to the F150 site, then build & price, pick a crew cab, ecoboost, 3.73 limited slip. Continue to the next page and check out the details of the HD payload package. Says 9.75" ring gear.

I work at the Sterling Axle Plant in Michigan building all F150 axles. The HD axle only differs from a regular F150 axle in that the tubes are thicker and thicker 7 lug shaft.

The 7 lug heavy duty F150 is a 9.75 rear not 10.25.

TOTALLY WRONG.

I KNOW for a fact that the 7700 is a 10.25 rear. I own one that I bought brand new from the dealer. The lightning is 9.75.

I put new 4.56 gears in my truck and they are the 10.25/10.5 sterling rear series. Not a 9.75. I also put a brand new, straight from the dealer, 2010 superduty aluminum rear cover. They have a 10.50 rear and this cover will not fit the lightning or 9.75 rear. Check with any Ford dealership or try putting a 9.75 cover on any 7700 rearend. It won't even cover the pumpkin.

OK, I knew that. But, the description of the HD payload package is the only place that actually spells out 9.75". Do you know if they are actually 9.75" or larger like some are suggesting?

My guess is that the old 7700 F150 (really a super duty) has the super duty axle while the new 8200 GVWR has the 9.75".

They are 9.75". It is the same carrier just the tubes and shafts are different.

I think you are confused, we are talking about 2011 and up F150.

Is the 7700 the tow rating?
My tow rating is 7700.

Boy didn't we get off track...
We now have
9.75
9.75 HD 7 lug
10.25 6 lug which is not part of an HD package but is part of the tow package

Good so far?

Oh I don't know about the 2011. Mine is an 02. So now they are doing the 8200 with a 9.75 rear. why go smaller on size. That is an eye opener for me.

Thanks

I would like to know why my truck is rated at towing 7500 lb with my 3.55 axle ratio instead of 9100 lb with the 3.73 axle. I was told the engine, frame, suspension and everything else is the same except the rear axle ratio.
I would be curious what sort of an answer you get from Ford. It takes a while to get an email back other than we have forwarded your question.

From the brochure it would appear you have the longer wheelbase 157". Note the penalty in towing capacity you sacrifice for choosing four wheel drive, 400 pounds. Now look at what I ordered a 2012 with the same engine and ratio but regular cab 145" wheelbase, 1600 pound penalty for choosing four wheel drive.

Perhaps in the near future there will be some independent or legally binding way to come up with these numbers. Or at least independently verifiable way to check the numbers.
