I just got a 03 F150 4x4 x-cab. It has a 4.6 5 speed. Just wondering if this will be able to carry a slide in camper with out beefing up the suspension. Just for an example my son has a camper that weighs 1300 pounds empty.
Heck. Will the motor have enough power,,,lol.
And is the 4x4 susspension any more heavy duty than a regular half ton. Thanks.
I use to have an 03’ , 3sp auto with OD , and 4.6L . I pulled pop ups with no problem but honestly i would not have tried pulling a travel trailer over 13’ . Especially a slide out .

I mean a camper that slides in the back of the truck.
doubt it has enough payload for a slide in truck camper.
check your payload sticker on the driver's door side. it'll say "Occupants and cargo should not exceed xxxxlbs."
that's the ballpark number for the most the truck can carry.

at 1680lbs payload...once I had this thing loaded...after cooler beer...food....and gear...I was pushing my limits.....engine had no problem..lol..

I have a '04 F-150 Heritage XL, 2WD, 4.2L, 5-speed manual. Payload rating 2060 lbs.
I've used it on several trips with a camper and trailer. I had to downshift to 3rd gear up the steep Colorado passes, but it went up fine. I installed Timbrens and swapped out the 3.55 rear end ratio with 4.10 gears.
Ford 2003 RV and Trailer Towing guide says minimum equipment for his F-150 hauling a slide-in camper is 5.4L V8 and 3.73 axle. Even when properly equipped, max weight of people and stuff in the truck plus the weight of the wet and loaded camper cannot exceed 1,770 pounds. Good luck in finding a normal slide-in truck camper that weighs only 1,770 pounds.
