Am I crazy

Have a 2012 platinum screw eco 5.5 with 3.73 max tow and looking to upgrade from travel trailer to fifth wheel. Found the trailer that I want 32 foot dry weight 8780lb. Pin 1380lb. Would really like some feedback both good and bad. Possibly from some people who are pulling fivers that are approx same weights. Thanks.

The way I understand it platinums have very low payload capacities. That is probably going to be too much trailer. I would probably pull it with my XLT but you will probably be way overweight

platinummack 07-30-2014 08:51 PM

I have herd many people say that. But I have 1539 payload.

maybe when I was 13 lol. I understand I will be a few hundred pounds overweight. Just lookin for people that have pulled this similar setup and how it pulled and how they felt pulling it also of they have had any vehicle issues related to pulling something like that trailer.

acadianbob 07-30-2014 09:00 PM

You don't have enough payload. And don't listen to the guys who overload their truck and then try to get you to do the same.

That pin weight is DRY weight. Wet (loaded) weight will be more. Then the weight of your hitch, family, etc. Your payload is insufficient.

Thats not a few hundred pounds...that tongue weight is dry. I am gonna go out on a limb and guess that the GVWR for the trailer is 11,000lbs, with that weight you would have a tongue weight of 1727 that leave you 188lbs overloaded before you even get in the truck. Plus the 1539lb payload on your sticker doesn't account for anything else you have added to the truck like a bed cover, toolbox, etc.

My guess is you will be closer to 550-600 lbs overloaded when you get ready to roll. 100-200lbs is ok IMHO but not 500+...you are in SuperDuty territory with that trailer.

platinummack 07-30-2014 09:25 PM

In the business I am in 500lb over doesn't seem to bad. It's nothin for me to have over 4000lb of weight in the box of a one ton in the winter time. I would definity have 10 ply tires as well as airbags or super springs.

sry, the way I see this post....more $$$$$ than brains...or I bought a plati and I'm gonna do this with it...

. Nope. I bought one because I can afford it and I wanted one. I didn't ask for anyone to be a smart ass. Simply trying to weigh my options. If you don't have anything to say about the subject. See your way to another one. And btw if the general consensus is that I need a superduty I will buy one. Just don't really want to have to change trucks.

Did anyone ask how you see this post? No. Go take your jealousy somewhere else please.

Then I'd say go ahead and risk your family since you apparently have your own ideas about the issue. Why ask if you have attitude about it.

Ftruck150 07-30-2014 10:11 PM

It seems like even 500 pounds overweight would be a low estimate. After you get the trailer loaded with whatever you're going to put in it (unless it's all behind the axle) there is more weight, then the weight of your hitch, no idea what one of those 5'r mounts weighs but they look like at least 150+lbs of steel or so (I'm sure someone here with one can answer that) + your body weight, all your passengers, your cargo, any accessories that you added to the truck after buying it, that 160pounds of available payload you had left just got blown out of the water.

lucky644 07-30-2014 10:15 PM

You're getting into illegal, and dangerous towing territory. You will be far more overweight than you expect once you start adding things to the dry weight. 500lbs over would be a incredibly optimistic number. A lot of people get killed because of these kinds of situations.

platinummack 07-30-2014 10:20 PM

Seems as all fingers point to either a superduty or upgrade to a larger tag along. Trailer now is about 6000 lb and 650 on the tongue. The other one I'm looking at it 7200 lb and 745 on the tongue. Not a huge difference going from 28' to 32'. I think I should be okay with that one. It's funny how when there is something you want how you seem to forget about everything else and try to find way around it to make it work.

HardcoreOffroading 07-30-2014 10:30 PM

Yeah so now you can decide whether you wanna keep your platinum or get a fifth wheel and upgrade.

The hard part. Because this has been a great truck. Probably end up with a new tag along. Wasn't plannin on a new truck for another two years.

Yeahwhen I said 550-600 I was just taking into account my estimate of 188lbs over after the 15% hitch weight + 150lbs for a 5th wheel hitch + 200lbs for him.

I know for me when I set out for a camping weekend just in the cab i have ~650lbs with Me, Wife, Kid & 2 Dogs.

In reality if he takes anyone with him he will be overloaded by closer to 800-900lbs.

1727 - Pin Weight
150 - Hitch weight
200 - Driver(just a guess I apologize if you weigh less)
200 - Passenger
--------
2277lbs - Thats Superduty territory no matter which way you cut it.

Real world. 8,000-pound fifth wheel RV on 2012 F-150 SuperCrew EcoBoost 4x2.

Steer axle 3,300 pounds
Drive axle 4680 pounds (exceeds your rGAWR)
-----------------------
GVW 7980 pounds (exceeds your GVWR)
===========

Trailer axles 6800 (per CAT scale)
hitch 1,200
--------
Trailer gross weight 8,000
------------------------
GCW 15,980
=======

The GCW with that 8,000-pound 5er towed by a 4x2 is less than your GCWR. But add 2,000 pounds to the trailer weight and 300 pounds to the hitch weight, plus another 400 pounds to the GVW if your Platinum is a 4x4, and you're overloaded over the GCWR, GVWR, and rGAWR.

That scale ticket was with a 5er with only 15% pin weight and 8,000 pounds gross trailer weight. If your Platinum is a 4x4, add at least 400 pounds to the GVW. Dry trailer weight is almost a useless number. Your wet and loaded 5er - even when very lightly loaded, is going to weigh more than 9,000 pounds with a hitch weight of at least 1375 pounds. When loaded with normal camping stuff, expect 10,000 pounds trailer and over 1,500 pounds pin weight. And you can expect to have a higher percentage of hitch weight when you load the front "basement" area with tools, jack(s), water hose, leveling blocks, extension cords, and other stuff you'll haul in the 5er. My 25' 30-amp extension cord is a heavy rascal. I don't need it very often, but when I need it, I need it.

So as others have cautioned - you're going to be severely overloaded with that trailer when wet and loaded for camping. For that trailer, you need at least an F-250, and if it were me I'd pay the bit extra and get an F-350 SRW. Diesel, of course.

Going to a TT won't help much with your F-150, because that 5er has a dry hitch weight of only 15.3% of dry trailer weight. Some TTs (including mine) have that much hitch weight.

You bought the WRONG truck for hauling such a rig. Stick to grocery runs with it (tongue in cheek, nice looking truck, but not made for hauling).
