About to buy a travel Trailer

Have a 2015 Platinum F150, 4x4, 5.0 v8 with tow package and 3.55 trans. Manual says I can pull 9100 lbs. I've already pulled a 27ft TT at 6600 lbs dry. Truck did OK. Some strain up hills. RV sales people are pushing me up to the limits of 8500 lbs ++. Any thoughts on maximum dry weight for the TT? Seems to me that 8500 lbs ++ to the max 9100 lbs is pushing it, especially for mountain driving.

You're in the right section of the forum to do some reading. The limiting factor is your PAYLOAD. Open the door, read the tag. You will NOT be able to tow either of those 2 weights.

You will need a weight distribution hitch of course, with bars properly sized for the weight you will have. You have to subtract from payload the weight of your truck's cargo, including passengers, pets, luggage, ... as well as the weight of the WDH (often 50lbs or so). Likely start with 1,400 - 1,600 lbs, end up with 900 - 1,200 maybe. With 15% tongue weight, if you could handle 1,200 lbs you could have an 8,000 lb trailer. With 900 you could have a 6,000 pound trailer. I'll bet you're around 1,500 and end up around 1,000 and can't tow either numbers the trailer sales/exaggerators people.

Well u should be able to pull a dry weight of 7100 pounds with out much trouble, other guys will say don't go over payload but being over a little will not hurt anything I'm 500 lbs over payload, and and I've been pulling since my truck was new with out a issue, the thing is if I used my 15 f150 I'm under the payload with my 05 I'm over but been pulling since 05 from mtn tripps to the beach

Keep in mind if I unloaded the bed of the truck I wouldant be over the payload, my truck bed is pretty loaded with chairs and tools and a ton of crap, know I'm not saying go put a 1500 pound tongue weight rv on your truck by any means but as long as u stay close you will be fine, my truck handles the load exceptionally well it's 7100 dry

Your right, I just purchased a King Ranch ecoboost 3.5L 6.5box precisely because of the weight. My Platinum 2010 5.4 4x2 pulled good using the WD Hitch but still was a bit sluggish getting up to 65mph but does maintain pretty good but felt it necessary to upgrade.

500 pounds over payload is a LOT not a little. Maybe your truck isn't broken and you're obviously still alive (at least until the first emergency), but it is irresponsible to encourage anyone to exceed rated capacities.

RV dealers do not care about your truck. They tried to talk me into a bigger trailer and when I ran the numbers I would have been over. I chose the next model down and while my truck pulls it fine I can tell Im close to the limit. Thing to remember its not power thats the limiting factor.

ill say this I'm under a max payloads truck numbers and they have nothing that will help them stop better or handle the load any better that's what I go by, I've been pulling with this truck for close to 76k miles, with zero issues, I've pulled a lot of different setups I'm still 500 under a max payload truck going by the numbers, heck I seen a brand new f450 when I bought my 15 f150 the payload was only 4700 pounds, and I know for a fact a 450 can carry more weight than that, for comparison had a 06 2500hd single rear wheel with a payload of just shy of 4000 pounds, those numbers don't even make sense, unless I'm missing something

Also with a 15 truck the payload is close to 500 lbs higher so that will give the op more room to not be over loaded my 15 is just shy of 1900 lbs

If you don't think the difference in suspension helps the truck handle the load better, you are mistaken. Clearly you ARE missing something (I have my theory on what it is that you are missing).

Robert while I don't expect you to change your mind I invite you to research what goes into payload ratings. a f450 with a 6.7 will have a lower payload then if it had the v10 due to the engine weight. Same with the 2500hd.
