60mph in 5th gear when towing travel trailer?
#51
The 18 wheelers are passing slower vehicles all the time when I'm on the interstates, in every state. Blue hairs don't stop hitting the highways when they no longer feel comfortable doing 65. If you think moving slower is hazardous, put your hazards on, but don't "flow with the traffic" at high speed just because you want to avoid being rear ended. Doesn't matter that your tires are rated for the speed, what matters is the fact that you are moving two object that are both heavy, that are attached at a single point that pivots.
There are still a lot of highways that limit trucks to 55mph. Do they present any unexpected dangers to the traffic that is flowing around them at 70? No. People can see large trucks and trailers, and they go around.

Agreed. Here in AZ there are stretches of interstate and highway with speed limits of 75. Whether the speed limit is 65, 70 or 75, my cruise stays set at 65, which on flat ground nets me 8th gear around 22-2400 rpm in moderate boost (8,000lbs). Heading up north into Payson, 55 is safer, as the ascent is about 5,000 ft over three main passes.
It is the driver's responsibility approaching from the rear to yield and safely pass any vehicle in front of them. Staying in the right lane and proceeding with caution and safety is my number one priority. Traffic flow can kiss my ***.

We have guys slam into the back of 18 wheelers climbing the grades around here all the time. Its one thing if its an 80,000 lb 53' trailer, its another if its my travel trailer. My wife and I were some of the first people to be stopped by LEO in the middle of the freeway after a guy on a motorcycle slammed into the back of a oil tanker taking a load from Vernal to Salt Lake City. The truck is doing 30mph on the uphill and if you are doing 70 it only takes a second or two of not paying attention to be in that guys bumper.
Save the speeches. I am more worried about what the other drivers around me are doing then the unsubstantiated saftey claims of some guys on the internet. You have no idea what is safer.
