Default 5th Wheel or Ball Hitch for Travel Trailer

I want to tow two trailers, one travel trailer and one lightweight boat trailer.

Here is the boat trailer with boat. Total weight about 400 pounds. (The boat weighs less than the trailer.)

I would like to buy a ball hitch type travel trailer (about 28'). Then add a hitch receiver to the travel trailer frame to tow the boat trailer behind the travel trailer.

Some travel trailer forums say that some states require a fifth wheel on the first towed trailer. Does anyone have any knowledge of this?

I found this on a cummins forum, you can choose to believe it or not. But according to it you can pull double bumper pulls in Texas as long as the total length is less than 65ft. Here is the link to the forum if you want to look at it.

Default Total Length 65 feet Limiting Factor

It appears as if total length of 65 feet is going to be the limiting factor in my travel trailer selection. Ball hitch is OK for the states in which I plan to travel.

Tomorrow I'm going to a local RV dealer to look at a new
2013 Heartland Prowler PROWLER 20 RBS

If a receiver hitch can be bolted to the frame of that travel trailer, it should work for me. Specs say the overall length is 26' 6".

It's a done deal. The Texas RV dealers wouldn't deal. The Iowa dealer was ready to deal. Can you spell "R-O-A-D T-R-I-P" ?

Drove up to Iowa empty 1,000 miles.
Drove home to Texas with new travel trailer, 1,000 miles.

You must have saved some serious coin to do that trip!
The boat is cool. What do you call it? Do you have some more pics?

Yesterday I did the Texas Tax, Title and License. The direct savings was $3,000 before taking into account the cost of the road trip. The cost of gas going up to Iowa was $200. Bringing my new trailer back home was about $400 of gasoline. It would have been more costly on the gas, but I was in no rush and held my average cruising speed down to 60 mph which gave me 10.5 mpg.

The net savings would be $2,400 by subtracting the cost of the gas, but if you are in the mood for a road trip anyway, the cost of the gas really shouldn't be deducted from the savings.

For details and photos of the road trip, see

My boat is a Mandarin 17 and is named Row-Mo-Shun II. I travel around the Texas, Louisiana, and Alabama area entering the boat to "row and show" in wooden boat shows. Next one is the Madisonville Wooden Boat Festival Oct. 12-13.

I've sort of gone "off topic" on my own post, but I am a sucker for wooden boats, and you asked for photos!

I think wood boats are beautiful. I would like to build or buy a cedar canoe.

Wow! You guys really know how to contribute to the deliquency of an "off topic" poster!

In answer to one of the questions, I bought the Thames rowing skiff from the builder who is a retired cabinet maker who now builds wooden boats as a hobby.

To bring it back on topic, here is the latest phase of my double tow project.

I still have to run the trailer wires under the travel trailer so I can plug in the boat trailer lights separately. Then I'll hitch up the rig and take it for a test drive.
